Sunday Alexander Technique
10am-noon @ the Little Studio
A weekly drop-in class for people who want to better understand how they move and use their body, and how small changes in posture, attention, and habit can make everyday life and creative work feel a little easier.
You don’t need experience, and you don’t need to know what the Alexander Technique is. What helps is a willingness to slow down and notice how you move and respond in your body, along with some openness to what might shift when you do.
-
Each week we’ll explore a simple, practical lesson, such as balance, breath, coordination, or habit, and how it shows up in real situations like working at a desk, rehearsing, performing, walking, speaking, or resting. Along with guided instruction, there is always space to respond to who is in the room and what feels most alive that day. Your needs and interests help shape the class more than any preset plan.
Over time, this practice can support you in feeling a little more at home in yourself and leaving with something practical to play with during the week. The aim is to help you feel more supported by your body, instead of feeling at odds with it, more friend than foe.
This isn’t about fixing you. It’s about discovering ways to work with yourself that give you more choice in life and performance, choices that feel easier and freer.
If you’ve been feeling tense, disconnected, stuck, or simply curious about how you might move and live in your body more freely, this class offers a space to explore that together.
Tuesday Improv Lab
7pm-9pm @ the Little Studio
A weekly drop-in space for improvisers who want to feel more grounded, expressive, and connected onstage. You’ll explore character, relationship, and presence in a way that supports emotionally rich scene work, while staying open to your wildest creative impulses.
This class may be especially helpful if you feel stuck, plateaued, overthinking, or a little disconnected from the joy of improv, or if you’ve been given feedback that you don’t quite know what to do with. Expect scene work, side coaching, and space to reflect on what’s happening in the moment and what helps you feel most alive in performance.
-
So often in improv classes, we end up focusing on rules, forms, and mechanics until we’re doing improv math in our heads, trying to write scripts on the fly instead of really following our fun. Then we get feedback on what should be different in our scenes, but very little clarity about how to change or practice that in a real way.
Instead of pushing you further into your head, this class gives you a space to explore your lived experience onstage: how you listen, how you respond, and how you make choices that feel connected to something real, rather than performing what you think you should be doing or chasing cleverness.
This sets you up to discover how you can more easily create scenes that feel authentic and satisfying from the inside, and that read as more grounded and compelling from the outside, while fully embracing absurdity, playfulness, and surprise.
You’ll be supported through attentive side coaching as we slow things down to work with what’s actually happening inside you and onstage in real time, so you can develop your own clear process for navigating scenes with more trust, freedom, and intentional choice.
This space is especially supportive through the more difficult stages of an improviser’s development, when growth feels unclear, feedback feels confusing, and the fun starts to fade a little, as well as during the exciting-yet-vulnerable process of stepping into your own artistic voice.
This is an invitation to give yourself permission to play the way you actually want to play, to follow what feels genuinely interesting and alive, and to trust that your own voice is absolutely worth bringing forward.
If you’re curious about group coaching or inviting me in to teach a class or workshop for your ensemble, school, or organization, I’d be glad to hear from you.
What could change for you?
Relief from pain and tension.
Imagine moving without pain and learning how to actually relax.
Together, we’ll uncover what it takes to create ease throughout your body—from head to toe—so you feel at home in your body and move through life with comfort, confidence, and freedom.
Calm, confident embodiment.
Posture isn’t just about how you stand—it’s about how you feel.
I’ll help you cultivate truly sustainable, beautiful posture—inside and out—that gives you a rock-steady foundation for mind and body, so you feel capable and ready to show up fully in the world.
Perform better, easier, longer.
Master technique, protect your body, and perform with presence.
When we work together, you become the expert of your own body, unlocking your most natural, powerful, and expressive performance—while avoiding the strain that can lead to burnout or an early retirement.
👋 Hi, I’m Grae!
And I’m here to help you.
My superpower is supporting people to discover solutions to mind-body problems from posture to performance while holding space for all the emotions that come up on the journey.
And Alexander Technique is my “secret weapon.” A simple description is that it’s an educational method for learning how to recognize and change habits of how you move and express yourself, but it’s really so much more.
Alexander Technique treats mind and body as a singular, integrated whole in a way that our language just doesn’t allow us to express, but which is absolutely necessary to truly and deeply address the most difficult problems that we face.
You have to experience Alexander Technique to truly understand it, and I would like to offer you that experience.
Since 2017, I’ve taught Alexander Technique as an AmSAT nationally certified teacher, and I’ve worked with 1000+ individuals in private practice and at ~12 different performing arts conservatories and training centers.
It has helped me navigate with grace innumerable challenges throughout my private life: as a parent, as a performing artist and creator, as a hypermobile person with recurrent/chronic pain, and with my neurodivergence as an AuDHD individual.
Whatever your own exciting mix of body-mind challenges, I invite you to find out if Alexander Technique can help you.
What is it like to work with Grae?

How It Works:
Step 1: Make Sure This is a Good Fit for You
We start with a free discovery call, followed by a risk-free trial lesson.
On your discovery call, we’ll explore your history, challenges, and goals and I will answer any questions you have.
If we both agree this is a potentially good fit to support you toward those goals, we’ll schedule a trial Alexander Technique lesson.
This is a risk-free opportunity for you to get a real experience of working with me. After your trial lesson, you will have a good sense if learning the Alexander Technique will be helpful.
Although sometimes things do change quickly, it’s important for you to know upfront that nothing in this work is a “quick fix” and this is one of those “get out what you put in” things.
For this to help, you will have to commit your energy to it. So, if you decide that the work would be helpful, but you’re not ready for it now, that’s OK! I’ll be here when you are ready.
If you’re ready, then we get to work.
Step 2: Learn to Move (and Think) with More Ease
Through (usually) weekly 1-on-1 sessions and personalized support you’ll learn key principles of the Alexander Technique to unlock freer, more confident movement in mind and body.
Together, we’ll:
Identify and release the patterns of tension and pain holding you back.
Build trust in your body with practical, gentle tools and explorations.
Apply these skills to your daily life and the activities that matter most—whether that’s working, parenting, or performing on stage.
This work is always tailored to you, from the mundane tasks of everyday life to the extraordinary moments that demand your best.
How much time per week does this require?
Less time than you are probably thinking! Private lessons are about an hour long, and you will likely want to spend somewhere between five and fifteen minutes per day practicing something called Active Rest, which is both helpful and pleasant.
Beyond that, because you’re learning fundamentals that apply to your everyday activities, you usually don’t need much if any extra ‘practice’ time — you apply what you’re learning to the life you’re living. There are generally no assigned stretches or exercises, either.
Step 3: Become the Expert of Your Whole Self
Imagine waking up feeling taller, lighter, and more at ease. You trust your body to support you, whether you’re facing a high-pressure performance or a busy day.
You’ll know how to:
Manage pain and tension calmly and effectively.
Stand, move, and breathe with effortless, confident posture.
Navigate new challenges with resilience and self-compassion.
And when life inevitably throws you off track, you’ll have the tools to find your way back—feeling secure in a future where you and your body function together with ease.
How long does this actually take?
As a starting point, I recommend a commitment of 12 lessons. This is often enough time to satisfactorily learn ways to significantly resolve the problems people first arrive with, although deeper questions often arise at this point.
Remember, this is a learning method that asks you to examine and change your habits at a fundamental level. Think about it like taking guitar lessons, but for your body (including your brain)— that is, some people are happy learning to play a few chords in an 8-week class, and some people become masters who continue to take lessons to deepen their understanding throughout their lives.
Most people end up actively taking lessons for between six months and two years, and then once in a while if something comes up that they would like a little extra support with.

Pain Relief and Tension Release
“My experience with Graeson has been amazing. Having a background in dance, sports, and eastern medicine it is a joy to work with someone who understands the nervous system so well.
Graeson helps me reprogram my body and mind every session and gives me tools to maintain the changes in everyday life.
I highly recommend anyone in chronic pain see Graeson. If you are an athlete and in good shape and health, he can help you reach your greatest potential, prevent injuries, and optimize your performance ability. I always walk out of a session with less pain, more awareness, and best of all: peace of mind.”
- Lauren Hayden, DAOM, L.Ac.

“I’m very grateful to have found someone like Grae to help me through the complex challenges that chronic pain can bring. His knowledge is scarily comprehensive, and he has enabled me to start re-learning how to move with less strain at my own pace. You will never need to worry about feeling judged about your issues with Grae. Just book the appointment already!”

Easy, Painless Posture
“Graeson is Grrrreat! I went in with pain in my wrist/elbow that was affecting my work and it’s all better now! No flare ups. In the process he helped my bowling game (seriously) and was able to find the cause and solution to my knee pain that I had previously resigned myself to always having… if you or a loved one has any kind of pain, I highly recommend Graeson!”
- Nick Z. (San Diego)
Client Interviews:
Aging with Ease and Mobility
“I feel liberated from fifteen years of stress and tension after working with Graeson. Over a fifteen year period I struggled with stress that manifested into a very tight neck and shoulders. Within twelve weeks of working with Graeson, I have found immense relief. With his help, I have gained control of my entire body, even beyond the physical. I have a new sense of calm. If you want to make a change to address pain, you will be in good hands with Graeson.”
- Mary L. (San Diego)
“I am deeply grateful to Graeson for his online Alexander Technique lessons. Thanks to this work, the lockdown period became a productive time for learning to release physical tension and to move in ways that work better for my body. I have avoided pain from repetitive stress thanks to what I’ve learned. Graeson is supportive and knowledgeable, and understands the inextricable connections between emotional and physical functioning. The online lessons are pure joy. Thank you.”
- Kayla S. (Online/Singapore)
“I can’t say enough good things about Graeson and his work. I was so impressed by our first interaction that I signed up for a series of sessions with Graeson.
At first our work focused on my aikido practice, but soon expanded into more. I am a woman in her 60’s who loves doing all sorts of sports and activities — cycling, surfing, aikido — and also has challenging work both physically and mentally. I have struggled with posture my whole life and more recently integrating an ankle injury and hip/pain stiffness.
Graeson has helped me to find ease with all of these issues which has enabled me to continue doing what I love pain-free which means freer and more joyous movement.
My appreciation for his work is boundless—thank you Graeson!”

About Me
Your body is meant to feel good to live in, and I know how it feels when it doesn’t.
I help people like you (re)connect with your body and its natural ease. That means moving without pain, standing with confidence, and performing at your best without strain—so you can focus on what matters most to you and sustain it throughout your lifetime.
As a certified Alexander Technique teacher, I combine movement, mindfulness, and creativity to help you feel more capable and grounded in your body—ready to take on whatever life throws your way.
But let’s be real: I didn’t always feel that way about my own body.
I first came to this work as an awkward teenager trying to find my voice and grace on stage, and it made a huge difference then.
Then, in my early 20s training in Chicago, I was sidelined by severe neck pain. Expensive treatments that were supposed to help were temporary at best and often made me feel worse.
Beyond the physical discomfort, I felt broken—like my body was working against me, and it would only get worse as I got older. If you’ve felt that way too, I want you to know: it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Desperate, I thought maybe this thing — Alexander Technique—that I had learned a decade ago might help. After just one lesson that reminded me of all I’d learned before, my pain went from debilitating to manageable.
It was clear to me then that I could keep getting better. And I did.
Through years of learning and experimentation, I discovered how to move better, think differently, and change my relationship with my body.
You can, too.
That journey did take longer than I wished for and without the support that would have made it both easier and faster.
And ultimately, that’s why I’m here: to help your journey go easier and faster than my own.
What I bring to the table:
Alexander Technique Expertise: I trained full-time for three years to become a certified teacher of this research-backed method for improving movement and reducing tension. The way I work now with AT is a bit like couple’s counseling for you and your body.
Holistic and Scientific Perspective: With graduate training in neuroscience, anthropology, and functional anatomy, I combine a broad understanding of how humans work with the latest movement and pain science. (23 years of improvisational theater come in surprisingly handy for that holistic perspective, too.)
Listening and Collaboration: Many of my clients come to me after feeling dismissed or misunderstood by others. I’m here to hold space for your experiences, to listen deeply without judgment, and to work with you as a whole person—not just a set of symptoms.
I also have a strict “No BS” policy—if something doesn’t make sense to you, work for you, or just sounds like BS, you tell me so we can figure out what works for you.Real-World Experience Solving Unique Problems: Over the last 10 years, I’ve worked with 1000+, from busy professionals and performers to people navigating chronic pain. Whether your situation feels complicated or like nothing else has worked, I invite you to try this unique approach with me.
A few things about me, personally…
I’ve been endlessly curious about how and why humans do what they do since I was a kid, and I always believed that curiosity could be used to help others. I like to think this has come true.
I’m queer, neurodivergent (AuDHD), and hypermobile... and I didn’t fully figure any of that out until I was very much an adult.
Improv is my personal performance passion. It has been a creative constant in my life for 20-some years, and to this day one of my proudest experiences has been playing a cat in an existential relationship with a laser pointer for an hour and a half improvised play.
I used to think plants were boring compared to animals (and people), but now, my garden is a refuge and plants are as special an interest as I’ve ever had.
At home in Crest just outside San Diego, California, I share life with my wife Becky, our two daughters Clementine and Rosie, two cats, a bearded dragon, and 70+ fruit trees. If you come for lessons, sometimes you go home with fruit!
FAQs - You might be wondering…
-
The Alexander Technique is a practical method for improving movement and posture by reducing tension and unhelpful habits. It’s not about standing up straight or rigidly—it’s about finding ease in your body so you can move, work, and live with less strain and more freedom.
Whether you’re looking to relieve pain, improve posture, or perform at your best, the Alexander Technique meets you where you are and helps you move toward what matters most to you.
-
Alexander Technique is a cognitive embodiment training method. At its core, AT is about learning how to stop fighting with yourself—specifically, how to stop interfering with the natural coordination of your body—and being able to make choices consciously for how you use your body.
Many of the physical and mental challenges we face come from habits of tension and effort we don’t even realize we’re doing. These habits can make movement feel harder, contribute to pain, and even limit our ability to focus or express ourselves.
The Technique works by:
Raising Awareness: You learn to notice the subtle ways you create tension or limit yourself—like tightening your neck when you sit, holding your breath when you concentrate, or bracing your shoulders when you move.
Changing Habits: Through gentle experimentation, you’ll practice letting go of unnecessary effort and finding ease, even in activities that feel difficult or familiar.
Reconnecting to Natural Coordination: With practice, you rediscover how your body was designed to work—effortless, balanced, and adaptable.
What does this look like in practice?
In a session, you might work on something as simple as standing, sitting, or walking. With my guidance, you’ll start noticing how you’re moving—where you’re working too hard and where you might be holding tension without realizing it.As a teacher, my role is to help you explore those habits safely and mindfully. In-person sessions include gentle hands-on guidance, which helps you feel changes directly in your body. In online sessions, I guide you visually and verbally, helping you connect the sensations to what you’re observing in real time.
This isn’t about fixing your posture or following rigid rules. Instead, it’s about finding freedom in movement and thought, so your body can support you with less strain and more ease.
Fancy word version of this is: the development of the skill of conscious choice based on improved spatial and temporal orientation through proprioception leading to optimal postural tone and downstream effects.
Think of it as upgrading the operating system for your body and mind—one that makes every movement, task, or performance smoother and more enjoyable.
-
Each session is collaborative and tailored to your goals. Together, we’ll explore how you move, sit, stand, or perform specific activities, using mindful observation and gentle experimentation.
Expect a mix of discussion, movement practice, and hands-on guidance to help uncover the habits holding you back. You’ll leave each session with actionable tools you can use immediately in your daily life.
-
Both options are effective ways to learn, but offer slightly different benefits and logistics:
In-Person: These sessions include literal hands-on guidance, which helps you feel changes in your movement patterns directly. It’s like having a translator for your body in real time. This is the traditional way that Alexander Technique is taught.
In-person sessions are taught at my home studio in Crest, or it can be arranged for me to travel to you within San Diego County.Online: Without hands-on guidance, online sessions focus entirely on tools and strategies you can apply for yourself. Things sometimes take longer this way, but many clients find it empowering that all the changes come undeniably from their own awareness and work.
I taught primarily online for four years after the pandemic, and I believe it is an extremely valuable practice, especially when in-person work is unavailable. Online sessions are via Zoom in the comfort of your home.
Whichever you choose, sessions are tailored to you and your goals.
It is also effective to mix the two, or follow one approach with the other later.
-
Not as much as you may expect! The Alexander Technique is about integrating change into the everyday activities you’re already doing—sitting, standing, walking, or working.
The practice naturally becomes part of your life as you explore and observe during your usual routines, adding up many little moments into significant change.
While this doesn’t require much extra time, paying more attention does sometimes take energy, and an improved awareness of self also sometimes makes it harder to ignore your fatigue. Many clients also benefit from a simple practice called active rest, which takes just 5–15 minutes a day. There are generally no assigned stretches or exercises.
-
We start with a discovery call and trial lesson to ensure this work is a good fit. This allows us to discuss your goals, answer questions, and for you to decide if this work will be beneficial to you.
If you want to continue, the next step is a non-binding commitment to about three months of work (12 sessions). This gives you time to work through the initial learning curve and build momentum. We’ll check in on your progress and plan from there.
Sessions are recommended weekly to maintain progress, though life doesn’t always allow for that—and that’s okay! Clients typically work with me for at least three months and often beyond as new goals emerge. Once we’re done, you’re always welcome to drop in for occasional sessions when challenges arise or just to reconnect.
-
This work is highly effective for general musculoskeletal issues, including repetitive strain injuries, neck/back/hip/knee pain, and chronic tension or discomfort. It can also support people living with hypermobility and related conditions by improving stability and coordination.
Neuropathic pain (e.g., trigeminal neuralgia, fibromyalgia) doesn’t typically respond directly, but many clients report indirect improvements or better overall management.
If you’re dealing with chronic pain or tension—or have specific concerns—the best way to find out if this work is right for you is to schedule a discovery call so we can talk.
-
The Alexander Technique is often described as "the missing link" for performers because it helps you move with less effort and more freedom, allowing your full expression to shine.
This is why Alexander Technique is taught at hundreds of conservatories around the world!
Here’s how it supports creative movers like you:
Ease and Longevity: By reducing tension and improving movement efficiency, you can perform at a high level without overloading your body—protecting it for a lifetime of creative work.
Stage Presence: The Technique helps you feel grounded, confident, and fully present, whether you’re delivering a monologue, playing an instrument, or stepping into the ring.
Habit Awareness & Change: We all have habits, some of which we aren’t even aware of, and we take those habits into everything we do including performance. These habits are often at the root of those notes teachers and coaches have given you for years, but haven’t been able to tell you how to change. AT can help you find “true neutral” — you, without the burden of habit — from which you can make unconstrained creative choices.
Precision and Flow: With less interference from tension, your movements become smoother and more precise, whether it’s executing choreography or delivering a flawless kata.
Adaptability: It teaches you how to respond dynamically to challenges—whether it’s a demanding director, a tricky sequence, or the pressure of a live audience.
If your body is your instrument, this work helps you fine-tune it so you can perform at your best.

The base rate is currently $95 per hour session, with an available reduced rate of $65. If you have the means to pay, the true market rate is $125 and supports services for people with lower income.
Unfortunately, insurance does not cover this service in the United States at this time. You can generally use HSA or FSA funds for this service, but depending on your administrator it is possible you will need a Letter of Medical Necessity from your physician.

“I have alleviated so much pain from unneeded tension: lower back pain so bad it hurt to breathe, frequent headaches, pinching shoulder pains, and a hard time standing for long.
Working with Graeson and the Alexander Technique has been the most life-changing thing I’ve ever done for my physical health.
I have learned to help myself feel great in my body. I feel empowered to make good choices.
You deserve to be able to do this, too!
Graeson is a magical teacher who creates a safe and supportive space to learn about new ways of moving and being in your body.
10/10, would recommend, it’s amazing.”
-Kate A. (San Diego)
“Working with Graeson showed me that I didn’t have to be tense. I was surprised by the things my body could do — like run without clomping and hurting! And I couldn’t have asked for a kinder, more patient teacher than Graeson.
He showed me that my body is capable of relaxing, of moving, of not feeling like my limbs are bolted in like some Frankenstein monster.
I was surprised by the things my body could do — like run without clomping and hurting! And I couldn’t have asked for a kinder, more patient teacher than Graeson.”
